The western-style year dating convention commonly used in many parts of the world was created by the monk Dionysius Exiguus in or about the year AD The convention is based on Exiguus’ determination of the year in which Jesus Christ was born. In sixth century Europe, the concept of “zero” was still unknown. Thus, the year 1 BC was followed by the year AD 1. Furthermore, modern scholars believe Christ’s birth was actually four years earlier than Exiguus thought. In spite of these deficiencies, the dating system devised by Exiguus is now too deeply ensconced in the Western world to easily change.

I was looking at a small video clip we put up on You Tube the other day. This shows the world maps on our TimeMap of World History running quickly in sequence, giving a very raw, unscripted whistle-stop overview of world history. What interested me was the comments people had posted about it. I doubt whether most British history teachers have either. I can truly understand what its proponents are trying to do. Even to someone like myself, a committed and practising Christian, this is problematic.

I have argued against this view of history in more than one previous post for example, this one about Britain and China in the 18th century. At least BC and AD had the benefit of being so anachronistic that they merited no attention.

Decades later, they remain split, but the consensus seems to be that the decision to use one or the other is a personal or organizational preference. The same applies to the use of periods: use or don’t use them, based on personal or organizational preference. Both take as their starting point the year when 4th-century Christian scholars believed Jesus Christ was born, designated as AD 1 or 1 CE.

Dionysius never makes the claim that he knew the date of Jesus’ birth and no later writer makes that claim for him. He did not begin his efforts at reforming the calendar to accurately date the birth of Jesus of Nazareth; he did it in accordance with the wishes of the pope of the time who wanted Constantine ‘s vision realized. The Easter celebration of the resurrection was considered the most important of the church and Constantine, and those in power who followed him, wanted the event observed by all churches on the same day.

It was Dionysius’ job to help make this happen and he tried to do so by reforming the calendar; calculating the date of Jesus’ birth was a means to this end, not an end in itself.

Roman population size and population trends have been debated for long by proponents of low and high counts; these have recently been joined by proponents of a middle count. Each is based on a different interpretation of the enigmatic Roman census figures. Different understandings of patterns of death and disease, of marriage, of childbearing, and of infanticide follow on from these interpretations. Recent studies have added new perspectives, drawing on archaeological finds, and have started to pay more attention to migration flows.
